Movies, Movies!

I worked my butt off last week so I could sit down and do nothing over the weekend. So it came to pass, and I wrote some 5000 words or so in my novel (give or take) and watched my latest batch o' Blockbuster movies. So let's take a look!

Tron: Actually, I got this one last week, but the disc was scratched. I told Blockbuster Online to send me another one, but they sent me High Fidelity instead. So I rented it from the local store. It was an interesting movie, and probably would've been more interesting back when I was 10 and would salivate at the mere dropping of the word "video game". Nowadays, it was OK, and really it's the quintessential geek movie. I mean, the mainstay of all geeks (trust me, I know) is to fight the System and the Corporation and etc, and thus, who is the main villain in this movie? The heartless CEO of a computer software company. It says something for Tron that the visual affects are still cool to watch some 23 years later. The other side of the coin would be, perhaps, Lawnmower Man. At any rate, the movie wasn't bad, though it was still way cheesy, even for a geek like me. And there was kissing! Eww!

Taxi Driver: This is one depressing movie! And Robert de Niro is like 30 years younger! Weird, man. But I did recognize him after a bit, which is also interesting. I have mixed feelings about this film. On the one hand, I like how it all ended, but on the other, I don't know whether I like the character or not. But I guess that's probably the point. But I ain't a critic here, I'm just saying what I enjoy.

Crash: This movie starts out so depressingly dramatic that it makes the OC look like a normal town. But it's like those Quentin Tarantino films with all these characters that you either hate or like at first, and by the end, pretty much change your mind about all of them. Like QT movies, some of the characters redeem themselves, and some don't. This movie is a very nice look at racism (and why you should stay the hell out of LA), but to be honest, after the initial blatherings of it, it felt like it focused on just human morality instead. What I like about this movie is its honest portrayal of people. Most of us have our moments, but we all have our complete jerk moments too. If you ask me, this movie is ample demonstration of the degeneracy of humanity. But there's hope there too, that sometimes we can rise above our circumstances to do the right thing. If not for the random boobage, I'd probably give it a 10.

Layer Cake: I liked this one. I watched it with subtitles (like 28 Days Later) because of those damned British accents. But I like Daniel Craig. Again, there was the standard random boobage. It seems that once your movie has been rated R, you are required to show a woman's breasts just to, you know, really get the most out of the rating. Anyway, it's a strange film, and I'm no fan of pithy nihilistic endings, but what can I say? It had Chief Engineer O'Brien in it, and Daniel Craig's gonna make a cool new Bond.
Rating: 8/10

High Fidelity: Hilarious! I love thos movie. Do you know how many people I put up with that are like the characters in these movies? You know, the people to whom it is a sin to not like a certain movie/band/game/whatever. And vice versa. And John Cusack is awesome. It's got this romantic comedy plot to it, and if I summarized the plot, that's how it'd read, but really it's just a comedy about a "professional appreciater" and just, people like him. I guess that's why it's so endearing to me.
